Top 3 Tips to Take Your Motivational Speaking to the Next Level

Motivational Speaking

A career in motivational speaking can be extremely rewarding. Not only do you get to enjoy the personal fulfillment that comes along with inspiring others, but motivational speakers also enjoy a lot of freedom. Whether you’re just starting out in motivational speaking or have years of experience, there are a few steps you can take to take your career to the next level.

Step 1: Take Feedback Seriously

This is important at any stage of your career, but particularly for new motivational speakers. Consider every speaking engagement as an opportunity to sharpen your skills. One way to do this is to invite members of your audience to submit feedback. Send out a short email survey at the end of your presentation. Or by going directly to the event organizer and requesting feedback (this is also a great opportunity to request a testimonial if the feedback is positive). By not only collecting feedback, but taking it seriously and letting it inform your future speeches, you’ll grow leaps and bounds as a motivational speaker.

Step 2: Get Published

Boosting your credibility is key in the world of motivational speaking. People tend to be more easily influenced by people they regard as reputable themselves. Fortunately, the Internet makes it easier than ever these days to establish a reputation and presence. If you haven’t done so already, make sure you have your own professional website. Having social media accounts that you keep active and updated helps as well. You might also consider launching a blog or even guest-blogging for a relevant and well known speaking blog. Having a strong online presence is a great way to make yourself more easily searchable.

Step 3: Know Your Audience

One of the biggest mistakes you can make as a motivational speaker is not knowing your audience. Or even worse, thinking you know your audience without actually taking the time to do research. By getting to better know your audience’s sense of humor, preferred interactions, and experiences, you’ll be able to tailor content that is more relatable to them. This allows you to reach them on a personal level that keeps them truly engaged.
