Newsweek Op-ed: The Lessons I Didn’t Learn in College

College graduation is coming up in several weeks, and students are less prepared than ever to join the workforce. That’s because a college education is woefully lacking in the most important element of a new professionals life – financial literacy.

The manager watched as I hesitated. “Are you having trouble?” she asked as I squinted at the tiny print. “Oh, no, I’m fine.” I stared at the form, trying to figure out how many allowances to claim–or what an allowance was, for that matter. I didn’t want to admit that I was stumped, so finally I just took a guess.

Here is a great op-ed that was published in Newsweek by a graduate in 2006. Her story is just as true today as it was back then, except now the market is even more competitive and tougher to get a job.
