Unless you’ve turned a blind eye to the world, you can’t help but notice that the financial outlook in America these days seems a little dimmer than it used to be. Battling an economic recession, housing and credit bursts and more, it’s time we took a look at what the root problem is. What it appears to have come down to is education – or rather the lack of it. Financial education – financial literacy – isn’t just a set of words to be glossed over. It’s a very real hole in today’s education system, and something we all need to be taking a part in. Our children have grown up in a world of instant gratification – where the money placed on a credit card doesn’t really exist and the allure of long-term loans at rock bottom (often unsustainable) prices are a waiting temptation. Companies are continually tempting us into offers with little long-term financial stability. And we’re taking the bait. It’s time we stood up together and started educating our children – and plenty of adults too – on the key principles of money. Living within your means doesn’t have to mean not living well. There are amazing opportunities and ways to push a dollar and enjoy every minute of life while doing it. Together, we can change our financial outlook.
