In Outwitting the Devil, The Devil mentions while being questioned by Hill that, “Children are sent to school to make credits and to learn how to memorize, not to learn what they want of life.” It’s a chilling statement of the educational system back in his time, and not much has changed since. Despite the best efforts of amazing teachers around the nation we’re often failing to reach our youth or aptly prepare them for the lives ahead of them. By conforming to the narrow structures the standardized testing work within, we are in face not educating our children at all – at least not in what matters the most. We are filling their heads with facts while denying them real world applicable knowledge and wisdom. I can only imagine how frustrated many teachers are to be stuck in such a rigid system. We need to free our teachers to do what they do best – TEACH! It’s time we engage students and teach them practical, real world skills. Each child is different, and standardized levels don’t help to bring out their best. It’s time we took a stand for real education.
