Why Consistency is Important When Pursuing Your Passion

Creating consistency can be a challenge, especially for multi-passionate people. When you have many great ideas or things you love to do, you can get pulled in many directions. But if you want to be successful in pursuing your passion, consistency is everything!

What is consistency?

The Oxford Dictionary defines consistency as, “The achievement of a level of performance that does not vary greatly in quality over time.” For business and life, that means establishing the good habits that move us forward toward our goals day by day.

In our businesses, determining the processes, checks and balances, and the measurements that show you are moving toward the results you want, is of the utmost importance. To ensure you are following your system for success, creating a schedule to dedicate time toward your goals and monitor your results, is necessary for achieving your goals and living your passion.

In life, you have to do the same thing – establish the good habits that allow you to become the person you want to be, while enjoying the lifestyle you want to live, as you pursue your passion. That could mean scheduling time for creativity, physical activity, spiritual development, or FUN, depending on your personal goals.

Every good habit you can start and consistently maintain that is in alignment with your vision for your life and the passion you are pursuing will keep you moving steadily toward it, building a life and a lifestyle that you love.

Why is consistency so important?

Consistency is everything when it comes to getting what you want in your life. Think about it like this, if you want to drive from point A on one side of the country, to point B on the other side of the country, then get in your car each day and drive toward your goal on the straightest highway between the two points will get you there relatively quickly, which is what you want.

But if there are days when you don’t feel like driving, so you don’t get in your vehicle, or you point it in a new direction when you do get in the car, it will take you exponentially more time to reach your goal. And if you consistently choose not to drive your car or to keep heading in different directions, conceivably, you would never reach your goal of getting to point B.

This is why consistency is so important when you are pursuing your passion.

Tips for creating consistency.

The reality is, we are all consistent in our ways. Some of us are consistently choosing NOT to do the things that take us toward the goals we say we want. We allow ourselves to slip back into old habits, drifting in our lives, letting the circumstances dictate our future.

It does not have to be this way!

Consciously dedicating yourself to pursuing your passion will not always be easy, but if it is something that you truly want to achieve, your dedication will light you up and bring you joy, even when experiencing the challenging times that help us grow.

To get better at creating consistency as we pursue our passion, we just need a few tips to make the process simpler:

  1. Make sure your goal matters to YOU! Sometimes, outside influences want to move us in a direction THEY think we should follow. When we do that, the goals we set are not truly ours and we are unlikely to be deeply motivated to reach them. Pursuing your passion means it must be YOURS, even if other people don’t understand it. They don’t have to! It’s not their passion. The more you can stay aligned with the things that matter most to you, the more energized you will be, and creating consistency from that point is much more straightforward! 2. Schedule time for your passion. Creating a schedule means that, like in our example above, you will move from point A to point B in the most expedient manner. What gets scheduled gets done! So, if it truly matters to you, make time for it! And if you are feeling guilty about putting yourself first, know this – the people who support you will appreciate you pursuing your passion because you show up differently. When you’re doing things that matter to you, you are happier, your energy is higher, and you love the life you’re living, as well as the people in it. They deserve that version of you – and so do YOU – so schedule time for pursuing your passion!
  3. Determine a way to measure your progress. As Peter Drucker once said, “What gets measured, gets managed.” It’s only by measuring your progress that you make appropriate adjustments when necessary, to stay on track and/or improve your results. In business, this tends to be an exercise that is much more cut and dried, but in our personal lives, it might be a little more elusive. For example, if your passion is spiritual development, some people could find it a little more difficult to measure progress toward it, than they might if they were doing something like building muscle at the gym, which is much more quantitative. That person might choose to measure their progress in the number of spiritual books read in a month, mornings in prayer or meditation, or by developing a system to track the way they feel each day, as they pursue their passion for spiritual development.

Using these tips for creating consistency when pursuing your passion, means you will be more likely to attain the goals you set around it, as you take each step toward it, day by day. The more consistent you can become with developing the good habits that support you, your passion, and the lifestyle you want, the faster you will reach your goals and start living the life of your dreams

When pursuing your passion, one of the tougher things you will have to overcome is the tendency to drift back into unsupportive habitual ways, which minimize your potential.
