When was the last time you did something for the first time? Many of us get into our routines or comfort zones and without intending we stop growing or find ourselves playing small. It takes awareness and intention to figure out how to stop playing small and fully step into your power.

Give yourself permission to build the success you desire! You deserve it and so do all the people out there who need your special skills and talents.

Understand What’s Really Holding You Back

There are many ways we play small and don’t even realize it. Sometimes it’s settling for “safe” instead of pursuing our true potential because getting outside of our comfort zone is, as you would expect, uncomfortable.

Other times, we say yes to other people’s wants and desires and no to ourselves because, as givers, we love the feeling of giving. Or we shrink our voices, ideas, or presence to avoid judgment and/or to let other people stand in the spot light. However, doing the same things only gives us more of what we already have and consistently giving too much of our time and energy away will push us past our personal limits toward burnout, taking away from our ability to create success.

What is important is for each one of us to figure out what’s underneath those behaviors that keep us playing small. That is how we will reveal what is really holding us back.

How To Overcome Fear and Become Your Best Self

In Outwitting the Devil, Napoleon Hill and I share how to understand and avoid the devil’s tools of control. A big part of that is identifying the fear(s) that holds us back from playing bigger.

Fear is powerful.

Whether it’s being afraid of criticism, failure, or sometimes even of success, it can keep us stuck. So, if we want to learn how to stop playing small, each one of us needs to figure out the fear that is making it easier for us to come up with excuses to avoid stepping into our personal power.

Start by doing a deep dive into your belief system. There will be many you inherited, some that came from your experiences both good and bad, and other beliefs developed from the vocalized perspectives of other people.

Those beliefs dictate how you think and act. This informs the decisions you make, and in turn, the results you get.

To step into our power, we all need to decide which beliefs we want to let go of and which we want to keep because they are an integral part of how we will develop our personalized secret for success

Each time we can conquer our self-doubt and power up our “I can do this!” success mindset, we take a step closer to realizing our full potential.

How to Reclaim Your Personal Power

Confidence is built when you take action. That action can be taking a huge leap outside your comfort zone, or doing something that makes you just a little bit uncomfortable, steadily working your way forward toward your goals.

It’s important for you to give yourself permission to do the things that work for you and you alone.

We all have different approaches and risk tolerances.  We need to honor our own personal ones and stop comparing ourselves to other people who are further along in their journey toward success.

As long as we are making progress—of any kind—and heading toward our personal vision of success, it is something to celebrate!

To get started on reclaiming your personal power:

  1. Define your definition of success. What do you want in your life and for your life? Who do you want to support to make impact? What behaviors (by you and others) support your definition of success? Together the answers will help you build a framework that will help you determine when you are in alignment with your definition of success and when you aren’t.
  2. Build your strategy. How are you going to make your success become a reality? It might mean speaking up more in meetings, developing a new skill or expanding your financial literacy so you can have the resources to live your dream. It’s up to you to build the strategy that supports your inner power and your external success.
  3. Take ownership of your time and energy. Giving is great and so is advancing yourself! Every time you say no to someone else’s priorities, you give yourself more time and energy to say yes to yourself and step into your power. That doesn’t mean you can’t give to others. It just means becoming more aware of the time and energy you have available and then using it wisely.
  • Embrace the opportunities that challenge you to grow. As you step outside your comfort zone, more opportunities will come to you. Embrace the ones that support your vision. Speak on the stage, pitch the idea, write the book…you just never know what you will love doing and how it will give you huge jumps in your success.
  • Surround yourself with people who challenge and uplift you. The people you have around you makes a big difference. When they are the kind of people who support you, hold you accountable and cheer you on each time you take another step toward the success you want, you will make great things happen in your life much faster than you will ever do on your own. Developing your power of association is a great way to start stepping into your personal power.

As you start eliminating self-doubt and building your confidence by taking action, you will find that bit by bit you will stop playing small and start doing the things that help you step into your personal power in exactly the way that supports the kind of success you want. Then one step at a time you will make your vision a reality.
