The one guarantee that we all get in life is that we will experience change. The growth mindset advantage will help you navigate all of life’s changes, both expected and unexpected, and use these experiences to bring greater opportunities into your life, to reach even higher levels of success.

What is a growth mindset versus a fixed mindset?

Someone with a growth mindset believes that you can apply your knowledge, skills and gifts (or learn how to) to get through any situation. It also embraces change and challenges as learning experiences that you can use to grow yourself further.

On the other hand, a person with a fixed mindset believes that their abilities are set and cannot be changed, and they prefer to embrace living in the status quo.

To get more in our lives, we need to develop our growth mindset and actively pursue change.

Why change feels uncomfortable.

The reason change feels uncomfortable is simple—you can’t predict the outcome.

When we don’t know what is going to happen it creates uncertainty, and our brains prefer predictability. When our life is predictable, our brain can preserve energy because it doesn’t have to think outside the usual patterns and daily habits that we engage in.

But the problem with living a life of certainty, is that we will never get the life we are dreaming about. We can only get that when we do things differently than we ever have before. That means applying the growth mindset advantage to thrive through change.

How to we do it? We start with the mind.

Practical ways to develop a growth mindset.

To fully step into your power, The first thing to remember is that a growth mindset requires daily practices tailored to your specific needs. Everyone starts in a different place because we have different experiences, knowledge, skills, talents, abilities and life situations.

To figure out your starting point, ask yourself these questions:

  • What is my bigger vision?
  • What daily habits am I willing to change?
  • What other things do I have to stop doing to get what I want?
  • What daily habits am I willing to embrace to reach my goals?
  • What other things do I have to start doing to get what I want?

Next, notice your inner voice and the negative things you say to yourself. They are often excuses that keep you in a fixed mindset and living in the status quo because it’s easier than making a change. But to get the life you really want and so richly deserve, you must embrace a learning mindset and develop unwavering self-belief.

Developing that kind of confidence starts with making small language shifts internally, which can make a big difference externally! For example, shift:

  • “I can’t,” to “How can I?”
  • “I’m a failure,” to “I’m learning.”
  • “I don’t have time,” to “What am I prioritizing instead?”

You can see these language shifts are small but the energy feels very different between them. And sometimes it’s a small shift like that, that can ignite huge opportunities.

Then, finally, track your growth along with your results.

It’s vitally important to set goals that align with your bigger vision (CLICK HERE FOR A FREE SMART GOAL SETTING GUIDE) because that is how you will know if you are moving toward it or not.

What most people don’t realize is that it is equally important to track your growth and the things you learned along the way because you can use that information to help you get past future obstacles and embrace other opportunities for change.

This is why I suggest chronicling your growth in a journal. Record:

  • Your big and small learning points
  • How you handled specific challenges
  • What you did to stick to your daily habits
  • How you embraced opportunities for change
  • The ways your self-belief pulled you through a tough situation
  • How your growth mindset supported you
  • What you did to set even smarter goals
  • How you developed your consistency and persistence as you achieved your goals

Not only will it make you feel good as you record your wins, but it will also help you when you feel stuck or overwhelmed, because you can use the journal to increase your motivation to get past the challenge you face.

Choosing growth over comfort.

It’s always important to remember that change isn’t easy because you are learning and gaining new skills. But as you develop and embrace your learning mindset, you will see that it’s just like riding a bike. It’s a little wobbly at first but, as you keep practicing, things become smoother. Soon, you develop your skill and you can go faster and faster until it becomes second nature and you don’t have to think about it any more. You just go and move toward the life you really want!
