Balancing Passion and Practicality | Get the Steps to Start Doing What You Really Want

When you can wake up every day and do something you are truly passionate about, life changes into something wonderful, however, that doesn’t mean you should quit your day job and jump into something new with your passion, without laying the groundwork first.

To do it successfully, you need to get the practical steps necessary to start doing what you really want.

Why is it hard to follow your passion?

Some people find it difficult to sustain their passion in the way that is required to make that passion into a business. Not everyone is ready for what it takes to do that. That’s why it is important to do a self assessment first to discover your strengths and areas for growth before you try to turn it into a fulltime profession. A self assessment will help you understand how you work best, so you can adapt your business or career around your working style to create higher levels of success. We all do better when we work in our zone!

It is, however, important to know that no matter how passionate you are about something, that passion can wane over time, especially if you don’t have a strategy in place to keep those fires burning doing the things you love. In business or in your career, there will be obstacles. Those obstacles can be frustrating and chip away at the level of passion you feel, if you don’t do the goal setting that is required to excel in any area of your life.

The reality is we are happier and far more passionate about life when we are working toward a specific goal and we can see that we are making progress as we move forward. Those wins we get as we pass specific milestones are important for stoking your passion. Learning what you personally need to do to celebrate them will help you keep your passion going strong.

That’s why blending practicality with your passion is so important. We all need success strategies to follow to bring our passions to life.

What is more important passion or practicality?

As you do your research into making your passion a career or a business, you will see that people have different opinions about what’s more important when it comes to passion and practicality. In my opinion, there must be a blend of both, to be successful in the long term. Sometimes one will need to outweigh the other along your journey.

Your passion will drive you and keep you focused. It can be like a magnetic force pulling you forward, and as you advance your skill and expertise in your specific area, you can carve out a niche that makes you the go-to expert there. That in turn, will boost your confidence, which can fire your passion even more!

But to make a living from your passion, you do need practical professional development or business development strategies. So many people get into business because they are passionate about their area of expertise, but because they don’t know the steps for running a successful business, they become frustrated, or worse, go into debt trying to make ends meet because they don’t have the business acumen necessary to succeed in the long run.

This is where practicality comes in. Building a strategic plan to build your career and business, as well as pay your bills is a must if you want to bring your passion to the world.

How do I make a business from my passion?

When I work with my clients to build their businesses from their passions, we all start in the same place – even if they have been in business for a while. We start with market research.

  1. No matter the area of your expertise and passion, you must learn more about your specific market, what your customers want, what your competitors do best and where you excel. When you do this thoroughly, you will find that there is a gap in the market you can fill with your passion. It could be a product or service that your competitors have missed, a style of customer service that makes a difference for the people you serve, or perhaps your personal way of doing something that makes it faster or easier to get things done.

There are so many ways you can stand out for the people you want to serve when you take the time to do the research on your niche.

  1. Once you understand your market and the people you are going to serve, you can start to build your brand. One big mistake that business owners make is that they think about their brand from their personal perspective, rather than their client’s perspective. Your potential clients will only buy from you when they find value in what you do. The value you deliver to them is the key to building a successful brand and business. That is where you need to put your focus for your brand development.
  2. Start small! Before you quit your day job to follow your passion, you will want to test the market to make sure you have something people want. Try one product or service and get feedback from your clients. This feedback is extremely valuable for your business’s development. When you find out what they like and don’t like, you can start tailoring your offering to make it even better! It’s a practical way to find out how you can deliver even more value through your passion.
  3. Then when you’ve found your sweet spot, you can start to initiate a bigger marketing plan for greater reach – but do your research before you go all in. There are many different ways to market your business and the things you are passionate about, however, some of them take a great deal of time and money to get off the ground successfully. Digital marketing is a great example. Depending on the niche of your passion, you could be competing against some well-established businesses. That means it will cost a lot more money and time to dial in your market strategy to reach the people you want, so that type of marketing might not be right for your budget or the stage of your business right now. In that case, try a different type of marketing, until you grow your passion into a larger business with a bigger budget.

Step-by-step you can take your passion and use it to build the life you want by using practical strategies and setting realistic expectations for each stage of your business as it grows.

Finding a mentor is also a highly practical and strategic move that will shorten your path to success, because an experienced mentor will help you avoid the obstacles that cause your passion to wane, and will give you further steps to make it easier to become successful doing what you really want.
